Tree Planting at Holy Family November 12, 2016
1) Earn service hours, 2) Help two of your leaders complete their Wood Badge "tickets," AND 3) Earn a very cool hand-made leather "Bigfoot" patch When: next Saturday, November 12, from 9:30-2:00. Where: Holy Family Catholic Church (Meet in the Scout Room if arriving by 9:30, out in the parking lot if arriving after 10AM) What: As a thank-you to Holy Family Catholic Church, our Troop 433 Chartered Organization, we will be doing a service project to benefit the church. Holy Family has asked us to plant six trees for them. Bring: Work gloves, glasses or safety glasses, filled water bottle, and a shovel or pick. Lunch (provided): Pizza and lemonade courtesy of Ted Colebeck of HFCC. ASM Lee Miller will be teaching a short course on "Leave No Trace" before our service project. Scouts who attend the training course will earn the leather Bigfoot patch. (Bigfoot, or Sasquatch, is a creature famous for "leaving no trace" of his presence in the forests of North America). Meet in the Scout Room at 9:30AM for the Leave No Trace training. Tree Planting Details for Ted Colebeck of Holy Family... ************************* We will be planting 6 maple trees by the east parking lots. The trees will be about 2.5 inches in diameter. That equates to about a 2 to 2.5 foot root ball. We plan on pre-watering the area so we won’t need jack hammers. I think we should be able to complete the project in 3 to 4 hours. Start: 10:00 {note: Arrive by 9:30 for pre-project "leave no trace" session in scout room} Lunch: 12:00 Stop: 2:00
Scouts should bring gloves, glasses, water and a shovel or pick if they have one at home. We have a supply and can back fill. We also have a wheelbarrow to use. I’ll supply the pizza and lemonade. **************************** |
Den Chief Service Awards
Scouts - You may have noticed the braided shoulder cord that serving Den Chiefs wear. Regular den chiefs wear one of two different color patterns, depending on whether your den members are Cub Scouts (Tigers, Wolves, and Bears) or Webelos. There is actually a third color pattern of shoulder cord, though, which is quite rare and nobody in our troop has it yet. This is red, white, and blue, and signifies a recipient of the Den Chief Service Award. The worksheet for completing this award is attached. To receive it you must, among other things, have served as a Den Chief for a full year. Last year Buffalo, Parker, Sam T., Liam, and Deven met this requirement (let me know if I am forgetting anyone else). I encourage you all to complete as much as you can of the attached application for this big award and come to me for the leader signatures. Once you earn the Den Chief Award you can wear the red, white, and blue shoulder cord as long as you are a boy scout (whether or not you continue to serve as a Den Chief)! If you have a Den Chief cord or booklet that you no longer need, please return it to me so it can be used by another scout. Kennesaw Flag Procession on September 10, 2016
As I announced at the Troop Meeting on Monday, the Troop will be participating in a special service project on September 10, 2016, helping to memorialize those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on 9/11/2001. This year is the 15th anniversary and this special memorial only happens every 5 years, so many of us have not heard of it before. Please sign up on the Troop's Trip Reservations page so we can get a headcount and register our unit for this event. NOTE: Unlike other events of this type, which are only for scouts, anyone (parents, grandparents, friends, siblings, etc.) can register to carry a flag with our unit. Please list the names of everyone your family is bringing with you to the event so our headcount is accurate. It will be a real mix of folks from across our community carrying the flags, but with a strong contingent of Boy Scouts! As with the Marietta Cemetery Flag placement on Memorial Day weekend, we will not meet first at Holy Family Catholic Church, but will instead travel separately to the gathering point described in the following paragraph. On Saturday, September 10th at 10 A.M. the Marietta Kiwanis Club will observe and commemorate the 15th year since the attacks on our country on September 11th, 2001. Units are to arrive in full field uniform ("Class A") and gather at 9:30 A.M. for the Flag Processional, starting from the Grace Community Church, 770 Kennesaw Ave NW, Marietta GA 30060. The processional begins at 10 A.M. and we anticipate you will be able to leave around 11 A.M. As a part of the processional, three thousand flags will be carried along a march of one mile to Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield where we will install the flags to memorialize the lives that were lost on that tragic day. Note that these flags are larger and heavier than the flags placed on Memorial day, however, and the procession is a mile long, so younger cub scouts and elders may need help. You do not have to buy a flag to carry and participate. However, if you wish to purchase a flag ($25), click on the "Purchase a Flag" link on the event website: http://www.911fieldofflags.com/#home Yours in Scouting, Hilary Thornton Assistant Cubmaster, Pack 744 Assistant Scoutmaster, Troop 433 Unit Commissioner -- Pack 815, Pack 797, Troop 797 Cell # 267-414-9356 Wood Badge 92-81 Owl Patrol ![]() |
Upcoming Events - Fall 2016
Scouts! Please remember we have the following upcoming events for everyone to enjoy! Court of Honor Our Court of Honor is next Monday night (August 8, 2016). All boys need to be at the church by 7PM and we will start promptly at 7:30 PM. This is a BIG event because we have all the awards that the boys earned at Summer Camp. We have over 80 merit badges to give out! Parents and friends are always invited and we hope they will come celebrate with the boys. Boys wear Class-A uniform. We will have a small party in the Scout Room after the awards ceremony. People whose last names begin A-L bring a snack to share, and people with last names M-Z please bring a bottle of caffeine-free soda. The Senior Patrol Leader usually supplies cups, plates and napkins. If someone could bring a cooler of ice, that would be great! Allatoona Watersports Weekend We will be swimming and boating at the BSA Aquatics Base. The weekend is August 26-28. This is a two-night camping trip with group cooking. You need to signup on our Troop Website on theTrip Reservations sheet. Even if you can only come for one night, you will have a great time! Rifle Shooting Merit Badge Campout We will be completing the Rifle Shooting Merit Badge in September. Many boys started it at Summer Camp, but did not finish. But even if you have not completed it, we will cover all the requirements. The event is September 23-25 and includes two nights of camping!
